Searching for unlimited Cursor usually means wanting longer coding sessions and predictable costs. Before choosing API access, separate Cursor’s application features from the model usage billed through your own key.

How Cursor’s API key setup works

Cursor’s current instructions direct users to Settings → Models: choose the supported provider, enter its key, and select Save. BYOK applies to chat models; Cursor Tab continues to use Cursor’s built-in models. See Cursor’s official API key documentation.

For individual Pro, Pro+, and Ultra plans, the documentation says BYOK model usage is billed by the provider and does not consume included Cursor usage. Team and Enterprise accounts have different billing treatment: Cursor’s Token Rate still applies alongside provider model charges. Check your account’s current terms before estimating savings.

Check the provider before entering a key

A credential only works with the service that issued it and a connection route supported by your client. Do not assume that a key for an independent AI gateway can be entered into any named provider field. Confirm whether your installed Cursor version supports the required endpoint configuration and features.

For Unlimited AI, ask support specifically about Cursor, your version, the intended model, and the current connection method. Compatibility has not been tested for this article. Buying API access does not by itself create or upgrade a Cursor subscription.

Compare the complete cost of your workflow

Editor access

List the Cursor features your work depends on and identify which plan provides them.

Model access

Record the model service, included allowance, expiry, and any usage charges outside that allowance.

Measure one typical debugging task and one larger editing task. Include unsuccessful attempts when calculating usage. A low cost for a single response can be misleading if the model requires several extra rounds to produce a correct change.

A practical setup validation

Confirm the model and provider selected in the editor.
Ask a short question about a small piece of supplied code.
Request a narrow edit with a clear expected behavior.
Review the change, run its checks, and inspect usage in the relevant account.
Test any additional workflow you rely on separately.
